How long did you have celiac before you were diagnosed?

October 17, 2009 - 4:12 am 4 Comments

I was wondering, to anybody who has celiac, how long was it before any of you got diagnosed? Months? Years? I’m asking this because, well, I just diagnosed with a connective tissue disorder (ehlers danlos syndrome), and my WBC count was slightly elevated (10.9) and my celiac levels were slightly elevated. My blood pressure keeps getting lower but my doctor who diagnosed me (who is also a geneticist and specializes in rare genetic conditions) said that it was probably due to EDS. I have mucus that comes out w/o stool, clothes are looser but the scale says I weigh the same that I’ve always weighed, muscle cramps, joint pain, tingling and numbness in fingers, toes, etc…I’ve always had rotten egg burps/vomiting episodes/dizzy spells ever since I was little, weird menstrual problems, vaginal dryness, dry eyes, dry mouth (on and off), etc…I DO haveoverly flexible joints, my skin is really stretchy, so I do know that I have EDS(classical type) and that it causes symptoms like this as well

But I’m wondering if it can be causing EVERYTHING I feel. I still feel like I might have sjogren’s syndrome or celiac or something, or I don’t know if I’m just being paranoid.

Anyway, how long did it take you guys before you were officially diagnosed with it? I’m kind of scared cause I’m wondering if my symptoms could be signs of small intestinal cancer. Although sometimes, my stomach problems will completely clear up, and then all of a sudden they’ll hit again (like a flare up). So my symptoms are basically intermittent, they’re never really constant or there every minute of everyday.

Also, I’m very paranoid about the tools they use for endoscopies. I was supposed to have one because I’m afraid they don’t sterilize them properly. Especially since I heard about that place in las vegas nevada with the used needles and stuff at the endoscopy center. Have any of you ever gotten a disease like HIV or hepatitis from unsterilized tools before? Or have you ever heard of someoen getting HIV from an unsterilized endoscope before?

Sorry for all the questions. Thank you!

One more thing. I get really bad acid reflux. I get heartburn and a gurgling in my throat. For a few days it went away for awhile. But then it came back. I’ve been getting GERD since last may. It has gotten worse. Once in awhile I’l have a break and it’ll go away for a few days.

I am now 20.

my housemate was extremely sick for a year. she was literally bed ridden sometimes with every ailment god would throw at her. She went through every test possible. numerous blood tests, xrays, MRIs, PET scan, body fluid analysis etc…

Her doctor had a hunch one day and put her on an all gluten diet for afew days and then he would put an endoscope down her throat to see if she was a celiac.

She was so sick from the gluten diet the doctor couldnt preform the procedure and she was diagnosed with celiac disease. Now she is on a gluten free diet and is the healthiest she has ever been

suggest an all gluten diet to your doctor and see what happens.

btw (ill put my nurses hat on now) dont diagnose yourself, especially from the internet. Ive known many people who get worked up after diagnosing themselves and it turns out to be nothing. Ive had patients thinking that they have gastrointestinal cancers only to find out they just have irritable bowel sydrome. Symptoms can be caused by many conditions including many that are half psycho somatic or stress related.

dont be paranoid about tools used during procedures. it is highly unlikly that just because you think you will contract something from equipment that you will actually contract something. If you go to an accredited medical facility you are safe.

good luck

Why do I keep getting a dry mouth?

October 17, 2009 - 4:12 am 4 Comments

I keep getting a really dry mouth and I really want to know if there is anything I can do to stop this?

If you’re on medications, one of them could be causing it. You could also be dehydrated. Or your saliva ducts just might not be producing enough saliva. Also, if you have chronic dry mouth you’re at higher risk for tooth decay. It would be a good idea to get a rinse like Act or Crest ProHealth to help prevent cavities.

What is the differences between Health Insurance and Health care Program?

October 14, 2009 - 1:15 am Comments Off

Is it OK to have just the health care program and not have the Health Insurance Plan? I can get Health care program for half the monthly premium as compared to the Health Insurance Plan. Please advise? Is it advisable?

A "health care program" is usually a maintenance program – it doesn’t usually cover "major medical" issues, such as you coming down with cancer. But you’ll have to read the fine print on the program itself, to see what is and is not covered. THEN you have to figure out which doctors work in the program, and how long/hard it is to get in to see them. Try this site, if you want to find the best or the cheapest health insurance just in one minute,

http://cheap-health-insurance-usa.info/

Here you can get free quotes from different companies in your area, its the best way to find an affordable health insurance with a reliable company.

Hope this help,

Is it healthy to eat cereal with milk every single morning???

The cereal is the grain. The milk is the calcium and protein. It is definitely nutritional and healthy…and far better than skipping breakfast altogether.

If you are asking this because you eat Fruit Loops (or another comparably sugary cereal) each morning, I would add a note of caution. There are three dietary excesses to watch out for:
1. Too much white sugar
2. Too much white flour
3. Too much salt
It would not hurt to compare the brand of cereal you eat most with some of the other ones you like. Are they whole grain? How much extra sugar do you eat with them? How do they compare for grams of sodium?

You might be surprised at the differences among your favs.

Evoxac? Any problems anyone?

October 14, 2009 - 1:15 am 2 Comments

Has anyone ever been on a medication called Evoxac? It is a medication for Sjogren’s Syndrome, to try and counteract some of the affects of the dry mouth cause by the condition. My mom is on the medication and she also has a heart condition. She was on the medication for 3 years and her doctor have taken it away. They have since had to return it to her but not as often. Has anyone else had this problem with this medication?

A small percentage of patients treated with Evoxac report cardiovascular complications such as peripheral edema, chest pain, edema and palpitations. The best drug treatments for this disease are all in the same drug class, therefore they may cause same problems with cardiac side effects (ex. pilocarpine). You may want to check with a physician (i.e. mom’s cardiologist) to see if the cardiac problem is significant. If your mom has had cardiac rhythm problems or chest pain, for example, drugs in this class should be avoided, but some "heart conditions" are more benign.

There are also a few non-prescription drugs that are helpful for dry mouth like saliva substitutes, biotene gum, Glandosane mouth moisturizer, MouthKote, Optimoist, or ORALbalance.
