Is there a possibility that I have diabetes, or am I over reacting?

December 26, 2009 - 10:01 pm 8 Comments

So, for a while now, I’ve been waking up in the middle of the night, thirsty. Not like, "Gee, my mouth is dry" but like, "I’m really thirsty. I feel like I haven’t had anything to drink in days." I decided to do some research online, to see if I could figure out why I was so thirsty. I don’t know how I came upon it, but I started to look at the symptoms of diabetes. I’m not sure which type I would be more likely to have, but I’m slightly concerned.

Type 1 Diabetes
The symptoms of type1 diabetes are:
* Frequent Urination
* Unusual thirst
* Extreme hunger
* Usual weight loss or gain
* Extreme fatigue
* Irritability

-I haven’t noticed that I pee all that often, but I don’t really pay attention. I’ve been experiencing a lot of thirst. My hunger goes up and down, sometimes I’m really hungry, sometimes I can’t be bothered to eat at all. My weight never changes within five pounds from the usual. As for fatigue, I am tired. All the time. Even when I get a full night of sleep, I still find myself dozing off during the day. I usually end up taking an involuntary nap 5/7 days a week. My parents always tell me that I’m a grump.

Type 2 Diabetes
In addition to all the symptoms for type 1 diabetes, symptoms for type 2 diabetes include:
* Frequent infections
* Blurred vision
* Slow to heal cuts or bruises
* Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
* Recurring skin, gum or bladder infections

-I rarely get infections. My vision is terrible, I’ve always assumed it was because I needed glasses. It’s very blurry, and people are always surprised at the short distance it takes for me to not be able to read something. My cuts and bruises take forever to heal, my mother is inclined to think that it may be anemia or some other kind of blood problem, because I bruise and get cut so easily. Sometimes my extremities go tingly. There’s a history of bad circulation in my family. My dad’s hands go numb sometimes, and so do my aunts. There’s also a history of restless leg syndrome in my family and I experience that from time to time. I believe I have bad circulation, because my fingers and feet are always so cold. Many times, people have been shocked at how cold my hands are. My arm/leg/hand/foot falls asleep somewhat frequently, especially if I’m laying sideways with my arm and elbow bent to prop me up or support my head. I don’t get skin, gum, or bladder infections though.

I’m not sure if I am at a potential risk for either, because I’m still on the young side. Or maybe I’m just imagining it. I do know that diabetes is definitely in my gene pool though. Three out of four of my grandparents have it, though my mother, father, and brother do not. (yet?)
I’d say my weight is about normal. I’m five foot three and weight approximately 125 pounds.
I don’t think I eat excessive amounts of salt, no pizza, chips, pretzels, or even all that much junk food. When I eat junk food, it’s usually sugary, not salty. I don’t add salt to my food either.
I’ll admit, I haven’t been to the doctor in a while.
But I was wondering if I could have ‘gotten’ diabetes since I was younger?
I don’t know if I was ever tested for it, but if I was, then it obviously came out negative. Is it possible to develop over time, even though I’m not an adult yet, much less middle aged?

It’s worth the effort to find out. There are some blood tests your doctor can run to find out – I would recommend asking for a ‘glucose intolerance test’ – which would check not only your fasting blood sugar, but how your body responds to sugar. This would help to determine both types of diabetes and hypoglycemia. You might also have your thyroid checked at the same time. Good luck!

this is a very normal thing for most people and especially for those who breath with their mouth open while sleeping. try using one of those nose strips and it may help you do more breathing through your nose which will help keep your mouth a little more moisturized throughout the night.

I have a horrible bad breath,ive tried everything,gums,mouthwash,floss,mint ball,breath spray..some of them have a bad taste or didnt last long,it occurs after a few hours later. what should i do to get rid off? i dont have any tooth problem.

Make a habit of chewing saunf (fennel seeds) after every meal. This not just freshens the breath but also aids digestion.
Prepare a paste of sandalwood by rubbing it with water on a clean stone slab. Squeeze half a lemon in it. Use this mixture as a mouth wash. This will freshen the breath.

Strengthen Your Immune System with Antioxidants and Probiotics

December 24, 2009 - 9:52 am Comments Off

Helping our immune system by adding antioxidants to help clean up the free radicals damaging our cells is a route worth checking into. We can do this through our diet and supplementation of some specific precursors like MAX GXL to help produce Glutathione, which is probably the single most important defense against the damage caused by free radicals in our cells. We also need to deal with our stress levels and for goodness sake get off the couch, get some exercise and put the jumbo burger down!

Besides glutathione, there are other antioxidants that are important immune system supporters. They include Vitamins E and C along with the B-vitamins. Vitamin A is helpful and CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant and sadly- our production of it declines with age. Minerals that are also important immune system supporters include copper, zinc and selenium. The Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and flax seed oils have been found to act as anti-inflammatories and to offset suppression of the cellular immune system.

Probiotics are particularly important to the health of our intestinal immune system since our entire gastro intestinal tract relies on live beneficial bacteria (Microflora). Among other things, Lactobacillus improves the activity of our natural killer immune cells. Grape Seed Extract – Resveratrol – is yet another potent antioxidant with powerful immune system boosting properties and can also increase the activity of our cellular glutathione.

Do the old consume too much health care?How should health care resources be distributed across the population?

December 22, 2009 - 8:11 pm 2 Comments

What are each generations obligations to those before and those after them? Do the old consume too much health care? What is too much? How should health care resources be distributed across the population? Should health care be explicitly rationed on the basis of age?

Interesting question. How many young people, say 30 and younger have paid into a health insurance plan since they were first employed? How many of these have had extreme health issues that otherwise would have wiped them out? Truth is, and the insurance companies know, is that the youth have *always* subsidized the elderly because statistically,one is more likely to need to *use* health insurance when one is older, than when one is younger. So, younger folks premiums go to the cost and care of those who are older. In a way, not unlike a Ponzi scheme.

Is this bad? In strict terms of the youth subsidizing their older compatriots, no. But when it gets dicey is that the youth get old eventually, and when they get their insurance revolked because of a pre-existing condition, or, they have become too expensive to cover and subsequently get cancelled by their health insurance company, that’s when it becomes criminal.

So, short answer, no. There should be a Public Option that ensures the health care of everyone.

How do you cure bad breath/halitosis?

December 22, 2009 - 8:11 pm 14 Comments

I have tried everything possible to cure this!! I bought online mouthwash treatments called pro-fresh that helped for a while (about 2 years) then I guess my body became immune to it b/c I’m back in the same predicament. I floss and use a tongue scraper TWICE a day! This is very embarrassing and I haven’t asked my Dentist yet just b/c its so shameful. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Store shelves are overflowing with mints, mouthwashes and other products designed to help people control bad breath. Yet these products help control bad breath (halitosis) only temporarily. And, they actually may be less effective in controlling bad breath than simply rinsing your mouth with water after brushing and flossing your teeth.

Certain foods, health conditions and habits are among the causes of bad breath. In many cases, you can improve bad breath with proper dental hygiene.

Try the following steps to improve or prevent bad breath:

Brush your teeth after you eat. Keep a toothbrush at work to brush after eating.
Floss at least once a day. Proper flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth.
Brush your tongue. Giving your tongue a good brushing removes dead cells, bacteria and food debris. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush your tongue with at least five to 15 strokes. Pay particular attention to the middle third of the tongue, where most of the bacteria tend to collect.
Clean your dentures well. If you wear a bridge or a partial or complete denture, clean it thoroughly at least once a day or as directed by your dentist.
Drink plenty of water. To keep your mouth moist, be sure to consume plenty of water — not coffee, soft drinks or alcohol. Chewing gum (preferably sugarless) or sucking on candy (preferably sugarless) also stimulates saliva, washing away food particles and bacteria. If you have chronic dry mouth, your dentist or doctor may additionally prescribe an artificial saliva preparation or an oral medication that stimulates the flow of saliva.
Use a fairly new toothbrush. Change your toothbrush every three to four months, and choose a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Schedule regular dental checkups. At least twice a year, see your dentist to have your teeth or dentures examined and cleaned.
