Oral Glutathione Supplements Don’t Work

September 19, 2010 - 4:01 am Comments Off

I’m excited about what antioxidant supplements might be able to do for me and frankly, you should be, too. As the Yuppies continue to resist ageing – like we’ve resisted everything else up until now – the benefits that antioxidants offer are just too good to resist. But the problem is that the Antioxidant that most would like to supplement – namely Glutathione, can’t really be taken orally.

Tell Me About Glutathione.

Glutathione is an antioxidant that is manufactured in your body. Technically, it’s a combination of the amino acids cysteine, glycine and glutamine or glutamic acid and found in every cell of our body. That means it’s immediately available where it will be needed – one of glutathione’s many special attributes. But Glutathione is really a great deal more than that.

It’s known as the Master Antioxidant and if it wasn’t there, better known but less important antioxidants, such as Vitamins C and E which are the most abundant fat and water soluble antioxidants that we use will not function to their full potential. As well, Glutathione aids in the repair of DNA, supports the immune system and the removal of toxins from air and water pollution, along with many carcinogens and cigarette smoke. You health loves glutathione.

Increasing your serum levels of Glutathione is a good health strategy. Studies have undisputably demonstrated that some of the best known preventable diseases associated with aging, like Osteoporosis, Type II Diabetes and High Blood Pressure are easily associated with a drop in Glutathione levels.

As we exit our twenties (and could use the help!) our body produces less Glutathione. This is the reason why many well intentioned and health aware people are considering glutathione supplements. But an oral supplement is not the way to go.

The challenge is that for Glutathione to be taken into the bloodstream and be transportable to the cells in our body, it must make it through our gastro intestinal system. But in its oral form, it’s destroyed.

But there are a lot of alternatives available if you want to raise your glutathione level and one of them is through your diet. Why not choose 4-5 servings a day of the good vegetables and fruits like asparagus, spinach, broccoli and avocado. Good food will help provide your body with more of whatit needs to make its own glutathione. Other natural sources of the enriching foods to help increase your Glutathione production include Milk Thistle, Whey Protein, Selenium and Turmeric.

The second option available would be to supplement with glutathione precursors, which are products with the supplies your body needs in order to boost its own natural production to help compensate for the slow down caused by aging. MAX GXL from Max International is one product you could try.

Portion Distortion: Eating The Right Amount

September 17, 2010 - 4:03 am Comments Off

Life for the typical American adult is pretty hectic these days and after a long day of work, many of us have no desire to spend time cooking our own meals. So what do we do? We head on out to our favorite restaurant to grab a bit to eat. Unfortunately, we end up eating quite a bit more than a bite. the reason for this is that portion sizes for meals, especially restaurant meals, are quite a bit larger than they should be. If you are having trouble eating healthy to lose weight, one main culprit may be that you are just eating portions that are larger than necessary. The solution is simple: just eat a part of what they serve you and save the rest for another meal. You’ll feel better and you’ll look better too if you try this.

Help Yourself to Good Health and a Strong Immune System

September 15, 2010 - 4:06 am Comments Off

North America doesn’t have a healthcare industy – we have an illness care industry, instead. We’re being hammered by the media, our Government and a medical industry that only seems to know one answer to any problem – more drugs.

Try bringing the conversation over to “wellness” and no one will know your meaning That’s too bad because the best weapon available for fighting sickness is our own immune system. A health philosophy based on wellness would help us strengthen and support such a powerful weapon.

Bad diets, too much stress and aging all detract from the power of our immune systems. Growing older is particularly destructive and sadly, unavoidable. Our cellular and antibody functions get sluggish and chronic inflammation which is tied with many problems of aging takes hold of us. A chronic inflammation (think heart disease & rheumatoid arthritis) is also associated with oxyradicals and the damage they cause at the cellular level. This won’t surprise anyone who is familiar with the benefits of antioxidants.

Strengthening our immune system by upping our antioxidant levels to help mop up the free radicals clogging up our cells is a good idea. We can do this through our diet and supplementation of some specific precursors like MAXGXL to help produce Glutathione, which could easily be the most powerful efense system against the damage caused by free radicals. We also need to deal with our stress levels and for goodness sake get up, get some exercise and put the cookies away ! Besides glutathione, there are other antioxidants to boost your immune system. They include Vitamins C and E along with the B-vitamins, all of which are available as antioxidant supplements. Vitamin A is useful and CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant but as we get older our production of it flags. Minerals that are also important for our immune system include copper, zinc and selenium. The Omega-3 fatty acids found in flax seed and fish oils have been found to offset suppression of the cellular immune system.

Probiotics supplements are particularly important or the condition of our intestinal immune system since our whole gastro-intestinal tract is built on live beneficial bacteria (Microflora). Among others, Lactobacillus increases the activity of our natural killer immune cells. Grape Seed Extract – Resveratrol – is still another powerful antioxidant with powerful immune system boosting properties and also accelerates the activity of our cellular glutathione.

If we would look more to ourselves for improved health , we could be better off than we are now. Help strengthen and support your natural immunity with a sensible diet and some exercise and the considered use of supplements and precursors. Educate yourself about the options available to a notion that healthcare is supposed to be about the treatment of illness.

This year, I plan to greet the next flu season with my immune system running on all cylinders and I don’t want your flu shots .

What health problems can be caused by eating too much sugar?

September 14, 2010 - 12:49 pm 1 Comment

I’ve always liked lots of sugar in my coffee, in my tea. Would this cause certain health problems when I get older, if so, what would they be?

Be sure you make a distinction between sugar from fructose ("bad") and glucose ("good"). Humans are anatomically and physiologically designed to seek and consume sugar. The tip of our tongue tastes with pleasure only one calorie-containing substance, sugar (carbohydrate). Some tissues of our body, such as red blood cells and kidney cells (glomeruli cells) will only burn carbohydrates.

Under experimental laboratory conditions, however, where people are overfed large amounts of simple sugars, the human body will resort to converting a small amount of sugar into a small amount of fat (triglycerides) in the liver.

Yet other studies comparing sugar intake with risk of developing type-2 diabetes show people on high sugar diets are less likely to get diabetes. There is, however, a strong relationship between red meat consumption and diabetes… The lowest rates of diabetes in the world are found among populations that consume the most carbohydrates. Contrary to popular belief, refined sugars actually make the body’s insulin work more efficiently though large quantities do cause a spike in insulin production. Sugar is rarely eaten alone, but rather in combinations with fat as single foods, like cake, ice cream, pies and candy bars, or a combination of foods, like the standard American diet which is about half fat and half sugar. The sugar spikes insulin production, pushing the readily available fat from the spoonful of dessert right into the belly fat.

There can be some real drawbacks and health hazards caused by consuming simple sugars, especially for those in poor health. It’s generally best to eat only complex and unprocessed sugars. As the carbohydrate becomes more purified through refining, weight control becomes less efficient. Also, the more sugar is consumed, and the more often it is consumed between meals, the more likely the teeth will decay. Pure sugars have been stripped of all their nutrients, except for the simple carbohydrate—thus they are called “empty calories.” To metabolize the sugar, nutrients stored in the body or from other foods must be scavenged—in this sense “sugar robs your body of vitamins and minerals.

Hope this helps!

How do you prevent a dry mouth while running?

September 6, 2010 - 5:53 am 5 Comments

When I run for my cross country team, I get a really dry mouth and throat. It hurts when I swallow and my spit is white, instead of clear. And if I drink water, I get cramps. How can I prevent this?

It has little to do with hydration and more with the current weather. Around season’s change, more dust gets into the air and as you breathe heavily during running, those particles are like knives on the back of your throat. Water will definitely help with this but if you want something that will soothe; after your run drink chocolate milk. Sounds ridiculous but it will feel much better than water.
