Why does my breath smell after brushing and using mouth wash? How to stop thinking i smell bad?

February 9, 2012 - 10:02 pm 4 Comments

Ok i brush my teeth for 2 minutes and get a clean feel and then i mouthwash for like another 3 and spit it out….5 minutes later i get a nasty taste in my mouth and i know i got bad breath what can i do? Also how to stop thinking i smell bad even after i just sprayed myself with cologne and smell perfectly fine?

yes what the other person said. You should floss and most of bad breath is from your tongue. i forgot what its called but if you find you have these white things on the back of your teeth like say your bottom front teeth but in the back, that causes it too.. so get a toothbrush that has one of those tongue brushers too. Maybe get a hold of some breath mints or something like that

BAD BREATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

What to do when you have bad breath?

My mom says that I have bad breath, even after brushing my teeth in the morning.

I don’t smell anything bad, and no one else has commented on my "bad breath", only my mom.

So… i can’t really understand this. And even if I do have bad breath, how do I remove it? (Have tried mouthwashers/ I brush twice./ I don’t flosss/I don’t take alcohol or sweets/ I brush my tongue, but it still apparently is there according to my mom)

Hi Ho,

It’s often difficult to tell when we have bad breath, due to a process called acclimation, we actually can’t really smell our own breath and odors.

There are several things that may cause bad breath. Dry mouth and gum disease are often linked to bad breath. This is because the volatile sulfur producing compounds in our mouth that cause bad breath thrive in a dry, anaerobic environment. When our mouths are full of healthy, oxygen-rich saliva, then it is harder for the bacteria to thrive and create bad breath.

Does the mouthwash you use contain alcohol? If so, it maybe actually be contributing to your bad breath. Alcohol helps to dry out your mouth, which makes it easier for the bad breath bacteria to thrive and thus, cause more bad breath.

It’s also important to floss to take out food particles that are stuck between your teeth that will sit on the gumline, leading to more bad breath.

Diet can also cause bad breath. Dairy foods, foods rich in sugar, a diet rich in meat products and alcohol can result in bad breath. If you are lactose intolerant, this might be the main cause of your bad breath.

Dairy foods are notorious for creating bad breath. People that are lactose intolerant end up with more dense proteins available as bad breath fuel for the bacteria than those who have no problem with dairy foods (milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc.) The end result is a buildup of amino acids, which are easily converted into volatile sulfur compounds by the anaerobic bacteria found within the surface of your tongue and throat.

To avoid bad breath, brush, floss and use an oral rinse without alcohol in it 2-3 times a day. Make sure you brush the roof of your mouth and your tongue as well. Eating crisp fruits and vegetables like apples and carrots can help too.

How can you get rid of a post nasal drip and stop bad breath caused by it?

February 10, 2011 - 9:58 am 2 Comments

Ive got an annoying post nasal drip that makes me have bad breath sometimes. I brush 2 timess a day and thouroghly (tong ets), I use mouth wash and i chew gum alot. I also drink lots of water etc! Yet bad breath still creeps back! HOW CAN I STOP IT!

Hi Kalin,

Have you tried using a nasal-sinus irrigator? It just takes a few minutes a day and will probably be the most effective treatment for you. It will flush out your nasal passageways. That in combination with good oral care (brushing your teeth 2-3 times a day and using a mouthwash) should help. A lot of medications may give you dry mouth which causes bad breath, although they can definitely be helpful too.

You can read more information about Post Nasal Drip and how to fix it here: http://www.therabreath.com/art_postnasaldrip.asp. The article offers extensive tips and suggests some products that should be able to help you.

What is the best thing possible to conquer bad breath?

February 8, 2011 - 10:02 am 3 Comments

My brother has seriously bad breath.! Its not just an every now and then thing.! It is consistant.! What can we do?

Of course brushing and flossing well–you’d be surprised how long some boys will go without doing it. Be sure he brushes the tongue.

Eating a lot of green vegetables. The chlorophyll is what fights bad bread. Some fresheners use chlorophyll.

Bad breath can also be symptomatic of a health condition that needs to be taken care of. Gum disease or other health conditions can be the root of it.

How do I completely eliminate bad breath?

August 17, 2010 - 2:45 pm 3 Comments

I don’t have extremely awful bad breath or anything, but after flossing every night, brushing 2-3 times a day, and using listerine at night, I am just curious why I still wake up in the morning with bad breath.

Thanks in advance!

The only way to completely eliminate bad breath is to stop breathing. Everyone has "morning breath." During the night you don’t drink, eat, talk (presumably), or do anything to disturb the formation of bacterial colonies. No matter how much you clean your mouth, you cannot eliminate all the bacteria. They colonize overnight and release sulfur-containing compounds. Sulfur compounds smell bad. You can use a tongue scraper or brush your tongue before bed to reduce the bacteria on your tongue, but you still will have some odor in the morning.

Why are some people more prone to bad breath from foods than others?

July 20, 2010 - 10:07 am 3 Comments

I’ve always noticed that msot people can eat spicy curries rich in garlic and onions everyday but not get bad breath or halitosis like i do!

how come my breath is more affected by the foods i eat? i eat curry everyday. what shall i eat instead?
even after i floss and brush, the bad breath still stays! does the onion and garlic stay in my system?

do you have some sort of gum disease? because bad breath a lot of times is caused by some kind of disease in the gums. like some one else said, if you like curry keep eating it. but maybe you should go your dentist to find out what the cause of your smelly breath is. just make sure that brush and floss your teeth everyday. keep your mouth hydrated by drinking a lot of water.
