Getting rid of Bad Breath in a Dog?

September 28, 2009 - 4:14 pm 8 Comments

Can anyone give me tips on getting rid of bad dog breath? My 6 year old Pom Mix eats Iams food and treats and her breath is just terrible. Thanks!

Has she had a dental lately? A lot of toy breeds have problem teeth. Part of it could also be the food she’s eating. Do you brush her teeth regularly? It would be best for her to have a dental check-up, she likely needs a cleaning. Tooth and gum disease can lead to very serious health problems – kidney disease for example.

It is possible she needs a dental- is there plaque buildup on the back teeth? That can cause serious odor. Once she has gotten a dental brush her teeth daily with a canine paste and brush.

I had the same problem with my dachshund. I bought a doggy spray dental rinse at my local Petsmart. It seemed to help, and also helped with plaque and tarter.

I used to have a cocker spaniel who had a terrible problem, we took him to the vet and it turned out to be deep lip dermatitis, I’m not saying this is your dogs problem because I dont think Poms would get that, but I just wanted to say not to get those chew things as they are actually very bad for dogs…just read the ingredients list on the pack…makes you shudder, yes they may help initially with the breath, but what about long term, all the other bad stuff will cause, you certainly would be much better off letting a vet decide what needs to be done

Animals can also have BAD BREATH. To get rid of bad breath in them, you must first know what causes them bad breath. It starts up from bad cavity from the food they eat. Brushing their teeth to remove plaque and tartar helps, and taking other steps to maintain their good environment. The use of antibacterial products at http://www.oramd.com/bad-breath.htm will help as well.
