How do I treat dry mouth caused by my ADHD medication?

May 15, 2012 - 10:36 pm 2 Comments

I am in college and had to go on 30mg of Vyvanse to help me stay more alert, awake, and attentive in school. Unfortunately once the afternoon/night comes around I have terrible dry mouth and I am constantly trying to drink water and it’s not helping. I am constantly reaching for water. I feel so dehydrated and my pee is dark yellow in the mornings and I feel so parched! Does anyone have any recommendations on how to either get rid or relieve my symptoms?

If your urine is that dark, you are still not drinking enough water. Check to see if the medication itself discolors the urine. (like sulpha drugs).
You can keep Life Savers or some other hard candy to suck on for the dry mouth. Gum would also work, but it looks tacky and sounds annoying!

How can SSRI’s cause dry mouth when they don’t affect the acetylcholine receptor?

January 22, 2012 - 9:02 pm 1 Comment

Some have a mild affinity. Citalopram has no effect on the receptor, yet like all ssri’s it lists dry mouth as a side effect, claiming 20% of users report it.

Seriously asking a psychopharmacology question on YA! is not going to elicit many answers, that said, I’d recommend reading the PI sheet that comes with the medication.

There are several types of 5-HT receptors, the potential for cholinergic over lay exists, and the mechanism of "dry mouth" isn’t necessarily solely the responsibility of ACH.

Is there any way to wake up without a dry mouth?

November 7, 2011 - 10:15 pm 2 Comments

Is there any way to not have a dry mouth when I wake up? Sometimes it’s so dry it hurts, and even if I try to brush my teeth, I cannot get the mucus (sorry, I know it’s gross) out of my mouth. Is there anything I can do?

Ensure that you are breathing properly through your nose as you are sleeping. Get some nasal spray to use before bed which will open up your nostrils and stop you from breathing with your mouth open. Dry mouth can cause bad breath.

If you take paracetamol does it cause a dry mouth?

July 11, 2011 - 11:00 pm 1 Comment

I am ill and have been suffering from cold and headaches, so I have been taking paracetamol four times a day for the past two days. I have been suffering from a dry mouth and sore throat, and no matter how much water I drink, it isn’t making a difference. I was wondering, is this a side effect of the paracetamol?

paracetamol is to be used according to the age. you must have a piece of advice of Doc. an excess of dose may cause other diseases. instead of paracetamol try Aspirin which is used as anti inflammatory, analgesic and antipathetic. it is used for headache, discomfort and fever due to cold and muscular pains and aches. before using any medicine pls take an essential advice of Doctor.

Why does my seizure medication make me have a dry mouth?

April 9, 2011 - 7:44 pm 2 Comments

I take a medication for seizures called Tegretol. I keep having episodes of dry mouth quite frequently and I’m really thirsty. I drink plenty of water, but my mouth is so dry. What could this be?

Tegretol, unlike other seizure medications like Valproic Acid and Keppra, has a side effect of hyponatremia, or in other words, low sodium levels. Low sodium levels can cause you to be excessively thirsty and have a dry mouth. Your doctor should check your blood work for your sodium level on a routine basis so as not to cause you to be severely dehydrated. I would suggest going to your doctor as soon as possible.
